Memory Quilt Commissions

Memory Quilt Commissions

Made from significant pieces of clothing or other textiles, such as household linen, memory quilts offer the opportunity to navigate loss, serving as a gesture of consolation, commemoration and celebration. Cloth has memory; held close to our bodies until worn thin, faded by many washings, everyday textiles carry a record of their use and those who used them.

Rather than working from a predetermined pattern, each of my quilts are pieced using an improvised method, starting from the architecture of the clothing. The shapes of the garment and its particular construction — such as a shirt placket, pockets or the curve of a hem — inform each quilt top’s design. I include details of wear, subtle shifts in colour and texture, which impart the material with memories of the owner. Each commission is hand quilted and bound, an object of love and care.
